Event Description The international art movement known as Art Nouveau flourished from the early 1890s to 1914. Rejecting historical references and traditional geometric forms, it featured florid vegetation, sinuous lines, and asymmetry. Although the design approach encompassed all visual art forms, it was most prevalent in architecture and the decorative arts. Furniture, mirrors, metalwork, art glass, carved plaster, and intricate paneling all featured the signature “whiplash” lines of Art Nouveau. Originating in Brussels, and highlighted in the Exposition Universelle of 1900 (better known in English as the 1900 Paris Exposition), the style is strongly associated with the wealthy and fashionable. Popularized in smaller cities, the style easily integrated into new building types—elegant apartments, boutique retail, brasseries, bistros, and cabarets—associated with sophisticated urbanization.

Opening Days
Event Description In this class the face is the focus. Using different techniques and mediums, we will find fun ways to approach an often-daunting subject. Students will be encouraged to bring photos of family, friends—even pets. We will discuss the best kinds of photos to use and how to use the ones you have even if they aren’t the best quality. There will be a model for one session, and we will try self-portraiture. This is an interesting way to improve your skills, find some new ones, and have fun while you are at it. Materials: A 9” x 12” pad of mixed-media paper; soft vine charcoal (willow is the best); woodless graphite pencil, 6B, 8B, or 9B (the higher the number the better); pencil sharpener; kneaded eraser. Other materials will be discussed in class, and the instructor will bring some supplies for students to try and share. Max students: 12

Event Description Working with a life model, students will learn to identify and depict the core “gesture” of any pose. Emphasis is on short poses with the goal of increasing our ability to capture the body in motion. By focusing on the “verb” of the pose, and not the “noun,” we will explore the storytelling potential of the figure. This is an excellent class for those interested in animation and the entertainment arts or for anyone looking to inject more dynamism into their life-drawing practice. This class is for all skill levels. Materials: Newsprint pad, 18” x 24”; compressed charcoal pencils; grease pencil. Other materials are possible with instructor consultation. Max students: 12
