From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., guests will enjoy an open house with free admission, studio tours, refreshments, and from 12 to 4 p.m., live music by the blues-playing Nathan James Band. The afternoon will give visitors a chance to meet Lux resident artist Victoria Adams. A landscape painter from Vashon Island off the coast of Seattle, Adams will create a 48 x 48 inch oil painting in the Lux studio during her residency. The work will be inspired by the San Elijo lagoon, neighbor to Lux and one of California’s last remaining wetlands,. Lux Liaisons will guide tours through the studio and Adams’ exhibition of atmospheric landscapes of sky, land, water, clouds, and light. Free Saturday will also offer a special, one-day introductory rate for new members. The usual $150 Lux level of membership will be available to guests for $100. It includes one year of free admission for two adults, invitations to Lux residency openings and special events and a subscription to Lux’s quarterly calendar and newsletter. Members also enjoy a discounted rate at Lux’s Summer Art Camp for kids 6-12. Lux, San Diego’s interactive art destination, is dedicated to encouraging children’s artistic curiosity through Luxcursion (classroom fieldtrips to Lux,) the Valise Project, (portable museums presented to schools throughout San Diego,) Summer Art Camp, and Free Saturday. Lux Art Institute is located at 1550 South El Camino Real in Encinitas. Parking for “Free Saturday” is in the Sanderling-Waldorf School parking lot and in posted parking zones along El Camino Real. Lux hours are Thursday and Friday, 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; cost is $10 for two visits. For more information visit www.luxartinstitute.org or call 760.436.6611. ABOUT VICTORIA ADAMS While Adams finds inspiration for her primary subject matter in the weather and views of the Pacific Northwest, her imagery transcends region. Her work is inspired by a combination of fragments of actual photographed scenes, daydreams, and memories of paintings and places—all filtered, distilled and exaggerated through the influence of the historical landscape tradition. Adams’ work has been widely exhibited at galleries nationally and in the permanent collections at the Tacoma Art Museum in WA, the Museum of Northwest Art in La Conner, WA, and in numerous private and corporate collections. Her paintings will be the subject of a mid-career retrospective at the Tacoma Art Museum in 2010. Adams was born in Columbus, OH and received a BA in English Literature from Ohio State University. In her twenties, she moved to the Pacific Northwest, initiating her training in the visual arts and received a BFA in Painting from the University of Washington, studying under renowned painter Jacob Lawrence. Adams is in-studio March 26 – April 4. Her completed work will be on view at Lux through May 20. ABOUT LUX ART INSTITUTE Lux Art Institute, located in Encinitas, Calif., opened its doors to the public in November 2007 and is redefining the museum experience with its unique artist-in-residence program. At Lux, artists live and work on site, while producing a commissioned work of art. Throughout the year, Lux invites significant regional, national, and international artists to participate in the Lux residency and encourages visitors from across the country to observe and engage them. This one-of-a-kind institution invites visitors to not only “see art,” but also to “see art happen.” Slated to be the first “green” (LEED certified) art museum in California and located alongside one of Southern California’s few remaining coastal wetlands, Lux’s five-acre site overlooks the San Elijo Lagoon and is surrounded by a wildlife preserve that stretches to the Pacific Ocean. Santa Monica, California-based Renzo Zecchetto, AIA, designed the two-story building, a recent recipient of the San Diego Architectural Foundation’s top design award.
