Event Description

Elizabeth Carmel, a Sierra-based photographer, specializes in unique, expressive imagery of landscapes, waterscapes and international locales. Her work combines dramatic photography, vivid colors, and artistic touches to create new, captivating visions. Her Tuscan imagery is both lyrical and dreamlike in its handling of light and atmosphere in the pastoral locale. Carmel is a recipient of the prestigious Hasselblad Master Photographer award. Each year, only 12 photographers worldwide are honored with the award and with the placement of their work in the Hasselblad collection in Sweden. In addition to imagery by Elizabeth Carmel, photographs by Tom O Scott, Peter Fay, Abe Ordover and Lisa Ross, as well as paintings and monoprints by Saphire, will be on display.

Event Description

Oceanside Cultural Arts Foundation (OCAF) presents the 1st Oceanside International Film Festival on 15-18 October, 2009. This inaugural event is an opportunity for independent film makers to have their work screened and judged. It will also give the film buffs a chance to view local and international films. OIFF’s first year plans are to keep it small and intimate for our first year with films screenings from students local to San Diego, India, and Los Angeles area. The festival will also be offering workshops for filmmakers on various subjects, including music, films, financing, packaging and distribution. Event Description

The San Diego Mesa College Art Gallery invites you to an exhibition of paintings, drawings and renderings of public artwork by internationally renowned Chicana muralist Judith F. Baca. Her vibrant paintings for the mural La Memoria de Nuestra Tierra: Colorado 2000 (The Memory of Our Land) will fill 25 feet of the gallery walls. The final mural created from these works was digitally generated on aluminum substrate and hangs in the Central Terminal of the Denver International Airport. The Memory of Our Land deals with the Chicano/Mexicano history of the Southwest and in particular with the passage through El Paso, the “Ellis Island” of the region. This was the entrance point for the artist’s grandparents as they migrated north from Mexico to Colorado in the early 20th Century. In the same way that this mural brings together both the private and public aspects of this artist’s life, the exhibit seeks to explore these dual aspects of Baca’s work. ------ Judith Baca’s community centered creative process will be evident in drawings and digital renderings of her newest public artworks including the Cesar Chavez monument: Arch of Dignity, Equality and Justice, which was completed at San Jose State University just last year. Judy Baca’s public art reveals and reconciles the struggle of people for their rights and affirms the ties of each community to their home. Rather than imposing a monument on a neighborhood or site, Baca envisions an artwork that emerges from a people’s history and dreams. Baca and the community, together, co-create monumental public art, meaningful places that become “sites of public memory.” ------ The exhibit will also include well known ‘private works,’ personal pieces confronting identity and social issues: photographs and a silk-screen print of Judy Baca impersonating a tough and sassy Pachuca, a painting revealing the tragic cost of America’s involvement in the Middle East, and the colorfully ironic Pancho Trinity (1993), a set of mixed media sculptures that reinvent the iconic kitschy image of the ‘sleeping Mexican’ to comment on the struggle of immigrant groups. ------ Baca is the co-founder and visionary behind SPARC (Social and Public Art Resource Center) a community arts organization in Venice, CA. In 1976 she embarked on the monumental project of the Great Wall, a half-mile long mural painted in the flood control channel of the Tujunga Wash in the San Fernando Valley, CA. This mural depicts the untold stories of the myriad of ethnic groups that have contributed to the history of the U.S. and Southern California. The Great Wall was painted over a period of five summers by a team of historians, artists and over 300 youths. A DVD of this and other projects will play in the gallery screening room. ------ Show opens Oct 15th; reception and lecture Oct 22nd.

"Tijuana/San Diego: Cooperation & Confrontation at the Interface" - Overview: José Ignacio López Ramírez-Gastón’s spatialized sound installation, 24 Speakers & 24 Sound Sources, enacts the democratization of knowledge & 'reversed migration' in the use of technology. Media Womb creates an interactive sound cocoon of recycled egg cartons - visitors' movements inside the womb modulate sounds connected to media's mis/representations of Tijuana & transborder drug cartels. Media Womb was made by CUBO: Giacomo Castagnola, Camilo Ontiveros, Nina Waisman, Felipe Zúñiga. Former UCSD School of Engineering Dean’s Lea Rudee’s photographs document the Tijuana River’s path across the border, revealing its roles as drainage creek, city water supply, border crossing obstacle, & preserved salt marsh. UCSD Vis Arts Professor Fred Lonidier’s N.A.F.T.A. #15 "Rio Tijuana Bridge: A Tale of Two Globes or Two Tales of a Globe/Puente del Rio Tijuana: Un Cuento de Dos Mundos o Cuentos de Un Mundo" represents problematics of "globalization" from the perspective of organized efforts by workers to make gains in labor rights & work conditions.
