Event Description |
Art lovers and their families are invited to Lux Art Institute’s Free Saturday on February 6. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., guests will enjoy an open house with free admission, studio tours, refreshments and live music by Italian jazz guitarist Daniele Spadavecchia. Visitors can also enjoy the opportunity to work on a collaborative painting project in the Lux Classroom.
Additionally, SPECIMEN, the store project at Lux curated by art dealer Mark Quint and artist Adam Belt, will be launching an experiment for all to view. Called “Operation Astronot,” the experiment is based off a similar project two MIT students developed to create a low-cost alternative to other DIY weather balloon projects. It will consist of a typical handheld digital camera housed in a Styrofoam cooler attached to a weather balloon. The DIY space capsule will travel between 90,000 and 111,000 feet into the stratosphere to the edge of space while the camera, set on auto, incrementally takes pictures of the flight.
Lux Liaisons will guide visitors through the studio where they will be able to view resident artist Iva Gueorguieva’s stunning exhibit of large-scale abstract paintings, as well as the 100” x 150” work that she created during her residency.
Lux, San Diego’s interactive art destination, is dedicated to encouraging the artistic curiosity of guests of all ages. Lux’s programs include the new “Studio Series” (guest speakers share their perspective about current exhibits through commentary and discussion), Luxcursions (classroom fieldtrips to Lux,) the Valise Project, (portable museums presented to schools throughout San Diego,) Summer Art Camp and Free Saturday.
Lux Art Institute is located at 1550 South El Camino Real in Encinitas. Parking for Free Saturday is available in the Sanderling-Waldorf School parking lot and in posted parking zones along El Camino Real.
