San Diego, CA - The Voz Alta Project presents Attack of the Laser Bean featuring new work by Ricardo Islas and Sergio Hernandez. Attack of the Laser Bean was inspired by a free styling session where the rhyme sayer fumbled on laser bean instead of laser beam. Artist Sergio Hernandez came up with the idea of an exhibition of stories and characters that are familiar to both artists, local hero's who fight immigration, crush Arizona, and conquer the planet for the good of all. Moving away from iconic imagery of chicano and mexicano identity both artists decided to use characters that were familiar to them and attack the backlash of hate, the intense fear of immigrants and anti Mexican sentiments. Islas and Hernandez have teamed together to create a series of work that is light but serious, funny and whimsical and sometimes painfully real inviting the viewer to dig deep into their political consciousness and experience a super surreal world of what it is to be American in 2011. Attack of the Laser Bean is Ricardo Islas and Sergio Hernandez first collaborative exhibition together.
Join the Voz Alta Project for for a fantastic journey of Attack of the Laser Bean stories inspired by music, politics and personal experience and the artist's superheros.
Attack of the Laser Bean opening reception is April 2nd at the Voz Alta Project and will feature a small series of collaborative paintings by Hernandez and Islas.
The exhibition will close on April 23rd after the 41st Celebration of Chicano Park.
