Lois Stecker passed away September 2011, at the age of 92. An irreplaceable and much loved character in the San Diego art scene, Lois attended nearly every single art reception in town. Legend has it she even showed up at one opening in a body cast. We at the Athenaeum knew to expect her at 6:30 on the dot for each gallery reception, her camera ready and a smile on her face. She, herself, was a painter and photographer as well as an active member of the SDMA Artists Guild, Clairemont Art Guild, and San Diego Art Institute. Her artwork is held in many private and corporate collections, including Scripps Green Hospital and the Southland Corporation.
Her personal art collection is a "who’s who" of San Diego artists: Kathleen Marshall, Italo Scanga, Anne Mudge, Mary Ellen Long, Richard Allen Morris just to name a few. Her collection will be exhibited and bids will be accepted starting January 5. The closing of the silent auction will begin at 8pm on Friday, January 25.
What Comes To Mind is the artist’s role as visual translator across disciplines of art and medical science and art and our endangered global environment. We are no more separated from the natural world than our embodied mind, though we behave as if we were. We are of nature, born of water, at home in a blue striated marble, 70% water, orbiting in a universe that we have discovered is but one of many universes in perhaps infinite space.
Within ourselves we share remnant chemical constituents with every living thing and a common evolutionary past through millennia. We can live without food for some time but we cannot live without water. Wall books in the exhibit ask "What Shall We Do When The River Runs Dry?" when we have overused our common supply. There are drawings and dimensional drawings of Limbs and Trunks as visual metaphors for our identity with the natural world. There is a walk-in book of wild birds and grasses.
What comes to mind is that we are temporal, in a continual now. The past is memory, translated to artists slide books of brain images and Memory Pictures. There are tunnel books with brain scan movies as if in a wonderland of images in the mysterious realm of consciousness, of origins still unexplained. |
