Event Description Learn the art of sculpture at the next Free Family Art Day where families can create mixed media sculptures inspired by two of OMA’s exhibits: In Search of Shadows by artist James Hubbell and Flavia Gilmore’s assemblage exhibition: Paper, Wood, Metal. Kids will have the opportunity to explore a variety of different media and create their own three-dimensional form using wood, paper, Styrofoam, tin foil, wire, yarn and other found objects. At Free Family Art Day, children and their parents work closely in the artistic process designing small works of art that reflect concepts and themes from the exhibitions on view. All art activities and exhibitions on view are free to the public. Projects are designed to engage children of all ages. No art experience is required for the art activities. Healthy refreshments and kid-centric docent tours will be provided. For information about the museum or to volunteer at Free Family Art Day, call (760) 435-3720 or visit www.oma-online.org.

Event Description The Athenaeum’s jazz program returns in 2013 to the San Diego studio of the Athenaeum School of the Arts (4441 Park Boulevard) for a San Diego debut performance by Gamak, the newest ensemble led by acclaimed NYC-based alto saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa. Gamak showcases the stunning electric guitar work of David “Fuze” Fiuczynski, Mahanthappa’s bandmate in Jack DeJohnette’s current group and widely recognized as one of the leading guitarists on the New York scene. Fiuczynski’s unparalleled versatility and virtuosity, along with his unique abilities to convey alternate tunings and microtonal ornamentation, elevate the possibilities of this ensemble. Combined with Mahanthappa’s frequent bandmates, the ever-inventive François Moutin on bass (known to Athenaeum audiences from his performances with Jean-Michel Pilc and Ari Hoenig) and the expressive Dan Weiss on drums, Gamak presents a contemporary American music that synthesizes Western and non-Western musical forms and concepts. Colorado-born Mahanthappa has gained fame as one of New York’s leading young saxophonists, and also for his unique musical vision that merges influences from jazz, his South Indian roots, electronics, jazz-rock fusion, and funk. JazzTimes commented, “The result is uniquely charged and beautiful... Mahanthappa’s music is cutting, sleek and heavily rhythmic modern jazz… his biting attack pairs a Coltrane influence with an incisive, exacting articulation, which absolutely soars.”
