Event Description |
Cuban artist Wifredo Lam (1902–1982) was one of the masters of 20th century Modern art. Of Chinese, African, and European descent, Lam was the first Latin American artist of the period to articulate a complex vision of Africa in the Americas. The influence of Santería—the religion of the Yoruba people of Nigeria transposed to the Caribbean with enslaved Africans—is frequently credited with forming Lam’s iconography. In this presentation, art historian Marta Garsd will examine how Lam’s recoveries and simultaneous ruptures with the traditions of European art contribute to an understanding of his work. |
