Event Description Istanbul in the Age of Revolution, 18th–20th Century Early modern Istanbul, like the Ottoman Empire itself, had been extremely diverse and cosmopolitan. This multi-ethnic and multi-religious reality, however, was fundamentally challenged during the era of nationalism and European revolutions after 1789, which dramatically affected and then ultimately ended the Ottoman Empire. Dr. Matthew T. Herbst, Faculty Director of the Making of the Modern World Program at UCSD, will explore this exciting age through developments in the Ottoman capital, Istanbul. This is the fifth lecture of the 2015 Friday Morning Lecture & Tour Series. Happening on third Fridays monthly, each lecture focuses on works on view and is followed by a docent-led tour.

The exhibition features two interrelated shows: Weaving a New Home and Mujeres Que Crean/Women Who Create: New Works in Mixed Media by Carolyn Castaño. These weavings and mixed media tell stories of displacement, resilience and eventual progress in small communities on the outskirts of Bogota and Medellin, Columbia.
