Event Description Long live Frida - Viva Frida art show just in time for Dia de los Muertes celebrates the fabulous artist life of Frida Kahlo. San Diego artist June Rubin reinterprets her painting “Frida Contemplating Death” in her acrylic painting to “Frida Contemplating Life” with a small sprout growing within the circle on her forehead instead of the original skull and cross bones. Other artworks include a fantastical Frida herself transformed into a white "Mad Cat" with huge whiskers and her distinctive black and red unibrow. Viva Frida show runs for the month of November, 2019. www.junerubin.com June Rubin: (858) 229-4571 I am attracted to vivid colored flowers and foliage, as well as Mexican Folk Art and the lush colors of Bali. I often paint outdoors and see my subject matter in natural light, and sometimes I paint purely from my imagination.

Event Description JFG is proud to present an exhibition of Japanese fiber artist Maki Ishiwata from the Chiba prefecture. After receiving her BFA at the San Francisco Art Institute in California, Ishiwata worked as an art instructor at the local elementary and middle school for 14 years. During Ishiwata’s 25 years in America, her potential in various creative fields grew. Since returning to Japan in 2007, and under the influence of her mother who worked with the lore of the traditional Japanese handmade paper (washi), Ishiwata became deeply charmed by its beauty and started to create original “plant figures” using washi. Development of the technique with paper strings and ligature became her characteristic style.
