Event Description

Printmaking is a centuries old technique for creating art and illustrations in multiple originals. In this 4 hour workshop, we will be covering both monotype and linoleum techniques. Monotype is very spontaneous and exciting; similar in some ways to painting. Linoleum is more precise and useful for creating card designs. Event Description

Breaking stereotypes of Native American Art Defying Expectations Contemporary Native American Art from San Diego County examines the work of four contemporary Native American artists. Featured artists include James Luna, Gerald Clarke, Catherine Nelson-Rodriguez, and Raymond Lafferty. Works within the exhibit respond to issues of Native American identity and authenticity, but also to problems affecting the entire region, such as the housing crisis and water shortages. The exhibition opens with a preview reception on Saturday, July 10 from 5-7 pm. OMA’s receptions are known for their party atmosphere complete with wine and scrumptious hors d’oeuvres prepared by OMA’s own Culinary Arts Council. Admission to the reception is $10, and free for OMA members as a benefit of membership. Defying Expectations is curated by Leah Cluff, a doctoral candidate at the University of California San Diego, in the Visual Arts department. The exhibition will be on view through December 12, 2010.

James Luna is perhaps best known for his 1987 installation and performance Artifact Piece at the San Diego Museum of Man; more recently he has represented the United States at the 2005 Venice Biennale and is a 2007 Eiteljorg Fellow. Luna’s recent works have involved sculptural installation pieces and performances, many of which present his perspectives on modern Native American identity. Gerald Clarke is also an Eiteljorg Fellow from 2007, his works are often large scale installations that respond to events and crises affecting much of the United States. Catherine Nelson-Rodriguez is a self-taught painter; her paintings reflect the realities of contemporary Native American lives. Several of her paintings have recently been purchased by the National Museum of the American Indian. Raymond Lafferty is a painter, filmmaker, and performance artist. Lafferty’s paintings are a contemporary extension of Abstract Expressionism; they juxtapose the appearance of a machined finish with a hand-applied painting process.

Event Description

The Ordover Gallery is pleased to announce a gallery talk by prominent fine art photographer David Fokos. Fokos's work is in the permanent collections of many museums, including the Museum of Fine Art, Houston and the Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego. His imagery is represented by leading galleries in the U.S. and overseas, and is published in numerous newspapers and magazines. The hour-long talk by David Fokos will be on Sunday, July 11, beginning at 11am in the Ordover Gallery's Solana Beach location. Following the talk will be a question and answer period. Twenty spaces are available; advance tickets are being sold. Fokos will discuss his fine art photography, the background on how he came to establish his unique vision, and the philosophy behind that vision. He will explain his belief as to how people perceive their environment, and how he can express, through his photographs, that which is not instantaneous. Fokos works to translate sensory perception into something we can see visually. Through the use of the camera (a device predominantly used to freeze time) Fokos strives to express that which takes a period of time to affect us. Fokos will also address art history and how other artists, such as Chinese scroll painters, Marcel Duchamp, Picasso, David Hockney, Robert Smithson and Andy Goldsworthy, worked to reflect the passage of time in their art.

The Fallbrook Art Center proudly presents Wheels of Desire Motorcycle, Motocross & Supercross Show. This is a unique and special motorcycle exhibit for California in that it highlights the motorcycle as art, and features a wide variety of machines from the late 1800s to present. A section of the show, sponsored by Monster Energy, is devoted to motocross/supercross for younger enthusiasts. The Prizm Process along with the Loving Hut Restaurant and El Cajon Boulevard BIA invites you to attend the “BOOKS, MURALS & MIRACLES” all-you-can-eat lunch fundraiser. We are hosting a delicious all-you-can-eat lunch on Sunday, July 11th to help raise funds for our “Books, Murals and Miracles” Summer Art Program. Your contribution will help aid youth to participate in a 4-week summer art school wherein we will be teaching various art techniques and life skills and culminate with the execution of a mural at “The Bookman” location in City Heights. This Summer Art School will only be possible with the help of family and friends who believe in outreaching and empowering our youth through art and creative expression.
