Art Meets Fashion Online Competition on Zhibit.org AMF: From Abstract to Alternative, Online Competition sponsored by Zhibit.org
Winner from the Teen competition. Gold - Dagmar Bjork Silver - Stephanie Robin Steward SDVAN and FOCUS have embarked on a project to enliven the SD art scene by cross pollinating the fashion and art worlds. By putting together teams consisting of an artist, a fashion designer, a teacher and a documenter, we hope to encourage products with immense creative energy. We are also sponsoring this online competition so that any and all that want to participate can do so. We are pleased to announce a competition hosted through Zhibit.org for online entries of works in all media with the theme Art Meets Fashion. This competition is a support project to the Art Meets Fashion project and will give as many artists as possible a free opportunity to become involved by expressing their creativity on this subject. Both judged and popular winners will be announced before the end of 2010 in adult and teen categories. We are looking for art inspired by fashion and fashion designs inspired by the visual arts. Judge: Kay Colvin, curator of L Street Fine Art Gallery (San Diego, CA) specializes in exhibitions with community involvement. She is responsible for developing recognition for artisd through the creation of promotional opportunities. Her educational background as SD regional coordinator of The Kid’s College and work at Monart School of Art makes her particularly attuned to the needs of the artists of our communities. Besides her work commitments, she has taken the time to be involved in the Hearts for Healing Art program benefiting Scripps Hospital and as a volunteer artist assistant for the fundraising programs for Susan B. Komen for the Cure of Breast Cancer Foundation. Entry: You must register to enter, but you do not need to have a Zhibit.org website. No fee to register or enter. Maximum two entries per person. PRIZES: Banner on SDVAN.net, Posting on Art Meets Fashion.org, Press release announcements, free Platinum, Gold and Silver membership for 1 year on Zhibit, discount coupons for all new Zhibit memberships. Juror’s Statement by Kay Colvin SDVAN and FOCUS have created Art Meets Fashion with the objective of “cross pollinating the fashion and art worlds.” The call for entry of the Art Meets Fashion online competition states: “we are looking for art inspired by fashion and fashion designs inspired by the visual arts.” In judging this body of work, I considered the actual point of intersection of art and fashion in culture. The works I found most compelling were those representing art and fashion as powerful equivalent forces, as opposed to simply art as fashion or fashion as art. Determining this point of convergence made selecting work a rather objective process as each entry was considered. It was not difficult to narrow the contenders down to a group of about a dozen finalists. However, selecting the three winners brought home the fact that the final stage of the process was subjective by necessity. There were many excellent works submitted and all entrants are to be commended for their participation in putting their work forward in this competition. Inappropriate entries will be disqualified. Winners will be contacted, then announced in Dec, 2010. Winners must agree to have winning entries featured on SDVAN and provide high-resolution image of winning piece and their contact information. Entry images can be used for the normal promotion of the exhibition but remain the copyright of the artist. Please note: Family members and employees of SDVAN, FOCUS and Zhibit LLC are not eligible to enter. Decision of the judges is final. Entries will be made online only and notice will be given to the winners by email and posted on SDVAN, Art Meets Fashion and Zhibit.org.
