A Reason to Survive (ARTS) is looking for artists and zinesters of all ages from San Diego and Tijuana who create street art, zines, stencils, stickers, posters, and more!
ARTS is looking for artistic expression that breaks conventions, addresses concerns, and challenges the status quo. As a creative youth development organization, we aim to inspire young artists who use art to voice their ideas and create collective change.
Public art, legal or not, has been used for generations to reclaim territory, raise awareness, and catalyze social change. In the 1960s, street art gained popularity in Black and Latino neighborhoods through the emergence of the hip-hop scene. Street art has since become a way for young people to respond to the social political environment and promote change in their communities.
Traditionally, galleries and publications have defined who creates, publishes, and displays artwork. Through this exhibition, ARTS wants to celebrate how street art and zines have changed the narrative by creating a culture where art and information are disseminated and distributed openly and independently.
