Event Description Josie Iselin is an artist, author, book designer, and ocean activist that has recognized the power of art and storytelling in scientific communications. She will take us on her journey from making algal imagery using her flatbed scanner, to writing and designing various books on seaweed, to her current project as partner of Above/Below, a collective committed to telling kelp forest stories. The Mysterious World of Bull Kelp is a web-based book that has was released in November 2023, with a new Spanish translation and added content coming this fall, 2025. Josie will walk us through The Curious World of Seaweed exhibit at The San Diego Public Library, explaining her process for artmaking, research, and writing. She will end by discussing the development of the comprehensive web-based book about bull kelp, a monumental and collaborative project that has been viewed by over 10,000 kelp-curious learners.

Event Description Get ready to spread your creative wings with the Birds of a Feather Mobile! Join Instructor Karen Williams Smith for a feather-tastic adventure where you'll create your own avian friend, perfect for perching in your home! Over two Friday evenings, you'll learn to sculpt your bird and its branch, then bring it to life with paint paint and glaze to make it pop! In the third class, you'll feather your bird’s roost with beads and string, giving it a cozy home. As an option, Karen can even assemble your mobile for a small fee, so you can skip the last class and let the magic happen!
