Event Description |
SDBG's Fall Festival connects visitors with harvest plants and autumn traditions, alike. From pumpkins and scarecrows to Halloween and Day of the Dead, the Garden decorates and celebrates the changing colors of nature and cooler temperatures in the air. Enjoy live music, hands-on crafts, fall-themed classes, and artist Katie Ruiz’s Dia de los Muertos ofrenda! Bring items from home to contribute to a community altar to commemorate loved ones.
To celebrate Día de los Muertos, SDBG has commissioned artist Katie Ruiz to create an ofrenda that will open to the public on October 23. Katie Ruiz is a Xicana artist who resides in San Diego. She is a figure painter and sculptor best known for her blanket series in which she portrays couples standing or lying under colorful Mexican blankets. Ruiz is dedicating the piece to another artist who recently passed away, Yolanda López—one of the most important Chicana/o/x artists working in California over the past five decades. |
