“Humanity could not have developed art, music, literature, science, philosophy, and it could not have brought forth the ideas of peace and justice, kindness and compassion if there had not been the possibility of improving upon ourselves. As we suspend in the gracious beneficence of a sunbeam, visualize our majestic personal starship. Hold it in your hands. That's us. Think of it kindly. Think of it compassionately. Think of it responsibly. Then, take a next good step. Help us evolve a little bit more. It is all up to us. And we can do it together.” Carolyn Benesh, Robert Liu and Patrick Benesh-Liu, Ornament Magazine

TIDBITS

This note came in from Senator Diane Feinstein: Senator Tom Udall (D-NM) introduced S. 2648 on March 8, 2016.  Among other provisions, this legislation would have allowed tax deductions for the fair market value of charitable artistic contributions, directed the Small Business Administration to develop additional assistance for artist-owned businesses, and required the Federal Emergency Management Agency to ensure artists are eligible for disaster assistance.  S. 2648 did not receive a vote before the 114th Congress ended.  It will need to be reintroduced in the current Congress and Ms. Feinstein confirms she will continue to support that bill.

California’s Art and Culture Districts : Deadline is an article by John Eger about the new cultural district designations. If you can’t apply this year…then maybe next year. Alan Ziter at the NTC Foundation is confident that Liberty Station will be selected as one of the 15 disignated cultural arts centers in this first round. It was extremely disappointing to hear of the proposed cuts to arts in culture in the city of San Diego. San Diego has long been a national leader in its commitment to public funding of the arts, however, the Mayor's recommendation to cut arts and culture by $4.7 million is over a 31% cut to the Commission for Arts and Culture. Compared to other city departments this is a disproportionate cut and is unfair. Please protest these suggested cuts by writing to your councilman if you live in the city of San Diego.

The Encinitas Commission for the Arts selected Irene Abraham for a design for the new retaining wall which is part of the major railway improvement scheme in Cardiff by the Sea. She will present her design by May 1 st the commission will then approve it and the entire council will then have to approve it. SANDAD was involved in the initial selection process..

The City of San Diego passed the 2018 budget. It reduced the cuts to San Diego’s arts and culture funding from 31% to 3.5%. While less than ideal, this much smaller budget cut is great news for keeping most programs intact and minimizing job loss. This news comes from Rise Up for the Arts. Read about how you made a difference in I matter A+ Art Blog by Patricia Frischer

PLUS: the Chula Vista City Council voted unanimously to support a budget compromise that keeps the city's Cultural Arts program, and other important city programs, intact. The council’s action averts the potential layoff of 10 – 15 city employees, and other cutbacks, that would have eliminated the positions of the Cultural Arts Program Manager, the Marketing and Communications Manager,  an Economic Development Specialist, two Code Enforcement officers and more. Thanks to Patricia Aguilar, Chula Vista Councilperson for this great update.

PLUS, PLUS: Grants totaling $15,032,837 have been awarded to various nonprofit organizations statewide this year by the California Arts Council. A total of 1,076 grantees will receive state grant funding for their work spanning the Arts Council's 15 unique program categories, benefiting California's students, veterans, arts educators, at-risk youth, formerly incarcerated individuals, underserved populations, and communities at large.

Muralist Micaiah Hardison will install a new mural, titled “Sea Change,” which depicts a native couple on the beach in Cardiff-by-the-Sea in two different epochs, pre-Columbian and modern time. Hardison said he isn’t taking down the current “Encinitas Harmony” mural — which is displayed on the wall of the 7-Eleven convenience store on D Street and Coast Highway 101 — due to any of the previous controversy about immagrants, but said it was always the plan to swap out the mural’s panels every couple of years.

TRANSITIONS

We want to wish Helmuth Projects the best of luck as they transition into a commercial gallery which will be selling work from its artists in an attempt for them to quite their day jobs.

The City of Encinitas will be transformed with public art due to the generous allocation of $50,000 from the city budget (now a whopping $95 million for this sea side community). Interestingly, Chicago is celebrating the 50 th year of the installation of Picasso’s sculpture in an event called Everyone’s Picasso. Originally met with mixed reviews by the public, the Picasso has become a Chicago icon attracting visitors from around the world. “Chicago’s Picasso is a representation and celebration of the lasting contributions public art make to this city,” said Mayor Rahm Emanuel. “With a daring design ahead of its time, the Picasso has been influencing public art since the 1967 unveiling. It is fitting that this anniversary is part of the 2017 Year of Public Art.”

But he had to declare that he is pro-LBGT to the senate. This is after the Art San Diego fair in its first year decided to leave his hotel in Del Mar and move south because of his anti-gay stance. Now we are full circle and Art San Diego is coming back to Del Mar but this time at Wyland Center, Del Mar Fairgrounds (2260 Jimmy Durante Boulevard, Del Mar, CA 92014) Look for booth #100 to see the New Contemporaries at the Art San Diego Contemporary Art Show Sept 28 to Oct 1, 2016 hosted by our community partners Studio Door.

Carlsbad is working on a new arts and culture city plan and has identified five main themes through a series of public meetings. The community wants to define themselves more completely through the arts. They want the arts to be a part of their everyday life, offer arts education for all ages, have public art within the city and take advantage of the arts to aid economic prosperity. We applaud all these goals and will look forward to seeing the plans that are designed to implement these goals. You can have input on this plan through a survey now available.

“ It is important to express oneself...provided the feelings are real and are taken from your own experience.”   Berthe Morisot

Every year we remind out supporters about the Giving Tuesday campaign. We appreciate our supporters and their cash donations, but this year we decided to offer the opportunity to support San Diego Visual Arts Network to a selected artist. We gave Cheryl Sorg the remit to incorporate the Giving Tuesday Logo into a specially designed art work that we could use on our website and emails to promote the day. Ms. Sorg uses a special paper that changes color from different angles. So when photographed from different viewpoints it appears to be a whole new work of art. We made a selection of these to create a banner for our site. We give back to our supporters every year with a no fee accessory exchange party. This year we have invite Cheryl Sorg to showcase her works of art at that party on Dec 12. We hope that the coverage we give to her along with our thanks will be of benefit to her. We certainly believe by having an original work of art created especially for our campaign, we are getting a great benefit from her. Our great thanks to Cheryl Sorg.

Tues. Nov 2 is the VIP Opening Reception: Beauty or Torture at the Women’s History Museum and Education Center. Across the ages, ladies have gone to extreme measures to alter their looks, often in painful ways that conform to beauty standards of the time. By revealing what people of their time found aesthetically and socially valuable, weird beauty trends throughout history helps us better understand changing social climates. Of course, it's arguably important to embrace beauty as an act of body positivity, creativity, and agency but the extreme techniques remind us that the history of the beauty routine wasn't always pretty.

The big boys of power in the art world are throwing jabs at each other. After the sale for $450 million of the da Vinci discovered in a little auction in 2005, Thomas Campbell, the former director and chief executive of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, wrote an Instagram reminding the new buyers just how restored this work was. “450 million dollars?! Hope the buyer understands conservation issues…” followed by “#readthesmallprint”. The sellers were not amused as Robert Simon and fellow New York-based dealers Alex Parish and Warren Adelson reminded Campbell that a respected Met restorer, Dianne Modestini, was used.
