We say farewell to 2 more arts administrators. Whitney Roux and J Noland are no longer at the Commission for Arts and Culture and the city still hasn’t named a new director. They only have 2 staff of 8 left. Can you function without a rudder or oars? It is all falling to Christine E. Jones, the acting ED. There policy of giving percentages of grant according to the non-profit budget is being examined. We have long been an advocate of the Commission and feel it is overlooking one huge area. It has the ability to shine light on arts and culture in the city and even county of San Diego. If every volunteer commissioners were required to go to one event a month and report on it using social media or even on the city websites like VOSD or SDVAN this would go a long way to drawing attention to our rich cultural life. They could even go together in a city limo, with red carpet and generate even more PR for the organizations that need to feel that they are valuable and supported. Yes, the money is important, but it should not be the commission’s only responsibility especially in a changing world of priorities. Thanks to Kinsee Morlan of Voice of San Diego for tracking the changes at the Commission.
