We are delighted to hear about the partnership between Qualcomm Institute at UCSD and San Diego Art Institute (currently show Rising Tide). We should expect to see this take the form of technology in art forms on display but there could be other ways that Qualcomm can supports the arts that could develop as this collaboration grows. scott b. davis from Medium is grateful to more than 50 individuals who helped fully fund the 2019 Northern Exposure program. Californians for the Arts (CFTA) and California Arts Advocates (CAA) are your state arts advocacy organizations. CFTA is a statewide regional network under the California Arts Council. CFTA will be leading trainings across the state as they build towards Arts, Culture and Creativity Month in April . CAA’s primary activity is to lobby the Legislature to increase permanent funding for the Arts and to protect and support legislation that is friendly towards the creative sector. The Museum and Library Services Act of 2018 (MLSA) passed the U.S. House in December by an overwhelming 331-28 margin! The bill reauthorizes the MLSA through 2025 and allows the Institute of Museum and Library Services to continue distributing federal grants to library and museum programs nationwide. To commemorate both its 35th year in San Diego and its 10th year as The New Children’s Museum, The New Children’s Museum is welcoming back Jason Hackenwerth as an artist in residency in the Museum’s Innovators LAB from January 7 – 15, 2018, During his eight-day residency, Hackenwerth will construct a giant latex balloon sculpture entitled Crystal Cortex that will span up to 50 feet from the bottom to the top that will be on display for three months. Hackenwerth will lead hands-on workshops for member families to introduce his practice. Museum visitors will be able to watch the balloon sculpture being built and slowly raised to hang in the atrium at the Museum’s entrance. We are so happy to Janine Free featured in SD Home and Garden and learn more about her past. We love her series of images of reflections in shop windows. Love of Haitian Culture is a timely exhibition at the William D. Cannon Art Gallery in Carlsbad opening Feb 11. This is from the collection of local resident Lawrence Kent. A short video was made by a Chinese team of the artwork showing by Sergott Contemporary Art Alliance at the LA Art Fair in early January. When I watched this video it had already received a large number of views from an interested Asian audience! We are very pleased to announce that the City of Encinitas approved the installation of a public sculpture by Jeffery Laudenslager, one of the SD Art Prize recipients. The piece, titled "Orpheus," will be installed by K Street Park at the south end of Coast Highway 101. The Encinitas Friends of the Arts will pay for the sculpture pad and lighting and Laudenslager is loaning the work at no cost for a year. This is the beginning of a whole set of new sculpture locations in Encinitas with changing and permanent installation. Three other works were approved at the same time by Maidy Morhous, Tim Richards and Betsy Schulz. The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) will host the 11th biennial Art Auction at its downtown location at 6:30 PM on Wednesday, March 28. Doug Simay is selling off some of his collection to a “discerning next generation of collectors.” He certainly has one of the most discerning eyes of any local collector we know. Kay Colvin is leaving the L-Street Gallery after more than 40 exhibitions showcasing local artist. We are unsure what will happen in the space, but understand it was part of the percentage for the arts building agreement when the Omni was first constructed and this space should stay an art gallery. Jacqueline Silverman , new director of the San Diego Art Institute tells us of a “Greetings” mural completed in the Little Saigon District, which spans from Highland Avenue to Euclid Avenue on El Cajon Blvd. The completion of this mural, which is filled with traditional Vietnamese culture, is the kick off to a larger Little Saigon Project that aims to install ten to twenty public art pieces over the next year and is a collaboration between the San Diego Art Institute, Media Arts Center, Aja Project, El Cajon Boulevard BIA and the Little Saigon Foundation. Money for this comes from Creative California Communities Grant from the California Arts Council and will be great opportunities for local artist. SDAI’s Sarah Trujillo-Porter is the project curator. Expressions of Wabi-Sabi: Embracing Impermanence Dana Mano-Flank is showing at Japanese Friendship Garden Exhibition Hall Gallery in Balboa Park (2125 Park Blvd. SD 92101) from Feb 9 to April 29 th. Wabi-sabi ( 侘寂 ), a traditional Japanese aesthetic, signifies acceptance of transience and imperfection. In this exhibition, "Expression of Wabi-Sabi: Embracing Impermanence", artist Dana Mano-Flank seeks to create awareness, insight, and explores the fragile connections between nature and human society. In her mixed-media paintings she incorporates wabi-sabi and captures the small and simple beauty of nature. She incorporates natural materials such as leaves, flowers, rocks, bark, moss, copper, metal, rice paper, sand, as well as pigments and recreates organic textures on her canvases. Dana received her degree in Comparative Arts from Washington University in St. Louis and is currently based in Northern California. The “Mattress Room” is returning to the New Children’s Museum. The project by Brian Dick (SD Art Prize recipient), No Rules Except…., first installed in 2008 is part of the exhibition childsplay. It interpreted two installations Allan Kaprow had created with his sons—Yard (1961) and No Rules, Except (2000)—by merging them into a new project that combined Kaprow’s essential elements (tires, pillows) with Dick’s characteristic use of recycled materials. This new installation commemorates both the museums 35th year in San Diego and its 10th year downtown in the visually exciting Rob Quigley-designed building. Other SD Art Prize recipients showing this month include Richard Alan Morris at R.B. Stevenson and at the Athenaeum with Tom Driscoll (and Allan Morrow), and Kim MacConnel one of the artists in the Invisible Border exhibition at City College Gallery.

Kinsee Morlan reports that the exhibition space in Balboa Park for Comic Con may not be called a museum and that this space will not assure that Comic Con stays in San Diego. California Center for the Arts Escondido is having a juried show of faculties called Campus Creatives: From the Classroom to the Museum from April 7 to may 13 th. This exhibition features forty-seven of our local visual art department faculty members teaching at the college level in fourteen San Diego County institutions. We were thrilled to see that Doug Simay has covered two shows in San Diego with his usual report from Los Angeles. Look for Ann Mudge at Quint and Steve Gibson at Southwestern College. Joyce Cutler Shaw is sadly no longer with us. She passed peacefully on March 18 she was born in 1932 in New York and leaves her husband Jerome. On of the first graduating from UCSD with a MFA,Cutler Shaw created in many, many medium from library installation to artist's books. She will be missed by many who she influenced and loved. So sad to hear of the passing of James Luna, local La Jolla artist, in March. Luna was a Mexican-American performance artist, photographer and multimedia installation artist.. In two or three years from now, after the blue line trolley from UCSD to downtown is complete, we may see a new UCSD art center on two floors of a new development in the former Quartyard space in downtown San Diego. A Step Beyond is an after school Creative Youth Development program helping underserved youth break the cycle of poverty through offering dance training, academic support, and family services to over 140 students from Escondido and San Marcos. “It is hard for me to recall seeing a Black person represented in a museum or contemporary space as a young person,” reflects artist Erica Deeman, showing her photo series Silhouettes and Brown at the Museum of Photographic Arts as part of its “Artist Speaks” which started at the end of April. “I reflect back upon this and wonder upon the impact for me personally. Yve Laris Cohen: Meeting Ground at the Museum of Contemporary Art downtown is at first glance and empty room with dark paneling. But the handout at the entrance is well worth a read. This is a duplicate of the paneling from Sherman Hall (now gone and the site under construction for the newly renovated museum in La Jolla). The artist tried to get the original paneling and transfer it but was told it was $1/2 million worth of wood. Turns out it was not real mahogany but Cohen had already made other arrangements. He also had some trouble when he asked to move the wall mounted security camera…..who would want to steal an empty room? They compromised by hanging the camera from the ceiling. There is a complicated history of the Sherman Auditorium and it is steeped with drama. I felt that even before reading the conceptual additions. We were delighted to see that Lux Art Institute made a call for 5 artists to be selected to exhibit during Lux Art Institute’s Art Couture event. This is the first year of this music and art festival within the 50-acre oak grove in North County San Diego. The mission of the festival will be a continuation of the nonprofit's past programming as an arts and culture incubator merging world class talent with local San Diego artists. We love the sunglasses designed by local grade school students. Class Acts is Knockaround' s ongoing campaign that aims to donate money, resources, and supplies to art education. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of these sunglasses will be donated to ArtReach, a local non-profit organization that connects practicing artists with students at local elementary schools with limited resources for art education. The Creative Catalyst awards were announced in May and they total $100,000 to five artist and their not for profit hosts. Only one is a visual artist: Maxx Moses who is known as a mural designer whose projects blend community engagement and art to create works that incorporate the spirit of the surrounding communities. His sponsor is The Urban Collaborative Project and he intends to bring together residents and artists to beautify areas in Southeast San Diego, Moses will help transform a vacant lot along Imperial Avenue Corridor by creating a functional art installation. Throughout the process, Moses will host workshops to teach hands-on mural making to youth in the Southeast San Diego-Encanto area. Others that received this grant were a playwright, a dance, and theater director and a film maker. The San Diego Museum of Art's Epic Tales from Ancient India exhibition opens on June 9, and features more than 90 works of art from the Museum's world-renowned Edwin Binney 3rd Collection, and offers the unique opportunity to experience South Asian paintings in their original narrative context by explaining the classics of literature that the works illustrate. The exhibition is returning home to San Diego after nearly two years on the road; it previously toured at the Princeton University Art Museum and the Blanton Museum of Art. There policy of giving percentages of grant according to the non-profit budget is being examined. We have long been an advocate of the Commission and feel it is overlooking one huge area. It has the ability to shine light on arts and culture in the city and even county of San Diego. If every volunteer commissioners were required to go to one event a month and report on it using social media or even on the city websites like VOSD or SDVAN this would go a long way to drawing attention to our rich cultural life. They could even go together in a city limo, with red carpet and generate even more PR for the organizations that need to feel that they are valuable and supported. Yes, the money is important, but it should not be the commission’s only responsibility especially in a changing world of priorities. It’s official: the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) has broken ground on its $95M expansion project in La Jolla. This prestigious award is given by Nihon Vogue, a publishing powerhouse in Tokyo that is largely responsible for the popularity of quilting in Japan. A Quilts Japan Prize is awarded at Visions Art Museum, Quilt Visions and also Quilt National, as a way to strengthen the connections between US and Japanese quilters. The award: a trip to Japan, during which the recipient teaches a workshop. On Oct 27 at the auction house Christie’s sold a Portrait of Edmond Belamy for an incredible $432,500. This was the first Artificial Intelligent (AI) work created and sold at auction. We are delighted to hear about the partnership between Qualcomm Institute at UCSD and San Diego Art Institute (currently show Rising Tide). Californians for the Arts (CFTA) and California Arts Advocates (CAA) are your state arts advocacy organizations. CFTA is a statewide regional network under the California Arts Council. CFTA will be leading trainings across the state as they build towards Arts, Culture and Creativity Month in April . CAA’s primary activity is to lobby the Legislature to increase permanent funding for the Arts and to protect and support legislation that is friendly towards the creative sector. Both are non-profits. Julie Baker is the CFTA Executive Director and our own Victoria Hamilton is president. The Museum and Library Services Act of 2018 (MLSA) passed the U.S. House in December by an overwhelming 331-28 margin! The bill reauthorizes the MLSA through 2025 and allows the Institute of Museum and Library Services to continue distributing federal grants to library and museum programs nationwide.
