This booth will feature artwork by San Diego Art Institute members who have been past years nominees for the San Diego Art Prize. It will highlight artists that have made the transition from their studios to solid representation in the San Diego art scene. There will be an exciting range of affordable work geared to young art collectors that want to support local artists.A very special section of the booth will focus on the outstanding works of the two emerging 2016 SD Art Prize winners William Feeney andShinpei Takeda. The collaboration between these organizations is rooted in our mutual interests to promote artists, exhibit their works, and network with the San Diego community. The Athenaeum is pleased to exhibit the paintings of Reed Cardwell: All The Presidents (Men) at the Athenaeum Art Center in Logan Heights (Studio at Bread & Salt, 1955 Julian Avenue, 92113) from Nov. 7 to Dec. 31. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, November 12, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Between 2005 and 2009 Reed Cardwell painted a series of all 44 presidents from George Washington to Barak Obama. The expressive paintings are based on official portraits. Each president looks at the viewer with a pensive, determined and self-confident manner. They know about their historical importance and they project it. We are invited to be part of that history. Reed Cardwell (1954-2013) was an artist and teacher at the Athenaeum from 1997 to 2013. He taught abstract art at the Athenaeum’s School of the Arts to a group of fiercely devoted students. They adored him for his kindness and selfless dedication to their needs and development of their own voice and vision. More info: Lidia Rossner 858-454-5872. At the La Jolla Athenaeum, don’t miss the selection by Mark Quint called “Give me a minute, I am thinking.” Also showing is Roy Porello and Aida Cervantes. If you, or the kid in the you, is a fan of “comix,” you’ll be a fan of The 613, a collection in which painter Archie Rand illustrates each of the Torah’s 613 commandments. All done in a wild style the New York Times calls a “mash-up of comic books, True Detective magazine covers and obsessive-compulsive disorder… like Marc Chagall on a bender,” each panel in The 613 is stunning, truly unique work of art. Meet the artist for a Bagels & Books event on Wedn. Nov 2 from 10 to 11:30 and a virtual and very visual guided tour of one of the most singular works of Jewish art ever made.
